Describe: Dark area, single light at top of image, open door, partial hallway, two hanging pictures, high contrast Interpret: The only light source for the whole image is the light bulb at the top of the page. The open door normally would be inviting, but the eerie lighting makes it dark and mysterious. The high contrast between the bulb and the rest of the image makes the scene very dramatic, as if something is about to happen. Also, the ambiguous items inside the room adds to the mysterious feeling of the photo. Theorize: The photographer utilizes dramatic lighting to deliver a message about the effect a single, definite light source can have on the photo. In this photo, the light source creates apprehension in the viewer. Judge: I really like the photo and the mood associated with it. Some of the dark areas may be slightly too dark because they lose some definition, but the idea still comes across thoroughly.
Describe: Brick planes. Concrete Planes. Light shines from far above. A grate near the top. Interpret: The image was taken outdoors. The lone light source is from the sun. This is an alley. The photographer is under an overhang. This is a multistory building, and the artist is on the first floor. Theorize: There is a lot of drama as the image is framed by darker hues. The single light source in the upper third gives the viewer a sense of hope or optimism. Having the light source positioned in the upper third or so of the image gives the image a more imposing feel. The light seems farther away and out of reach. The gradient from dark to light also creates drama. Judge: I really love the contrast in this image. The bricks give the viewer some visual interest, and I like how it contrasts with the solid concrete overhangs. The grate way up above gives a sense of perspective and how far away the roof really is. I think a person positioned at the base of the piece would really make the image look more monumental and take it all the way. A figure would even change the tone of the picture.. If they were curled up at the bottom, it would emphasize the hopelessness, and if they were looking up it would stress the optimism of the piece.
