10 Best from the Semester 11/10/14

  1. Describe: A close up of a flower against a dark backdrop. There is something on one of its petals, and the stem appears to be drooping.
Interpret: The "white" rose is drooping with a small insect eating at its petals. Its petals and leaves show signs of decay and being eaten by other creatures.
Theorize: The flower, though withering away, is sustaining other forms of life, such as that of the insect and the earth it will slowly decompose into. A possibly subtle reference to the life cycle.
Judgement: The contrast is very appealing, and the flower is just barely off center which makes it look intentional but not perfectly staged.

  2. Describe: An arachnid of some sort is in the center of the frame, a blurred background behind it. There is another small insect to the left, both resting on top of thin, transparent strands.
Interpret: It appears to be a spider preparing to eat its prey - a small fly, perhaps. The background is that of a wooded area, the light suggesting that the sun is nearly setting.
Theorize: "What is normal for the spider is chaos for the fly" - This is another possible example of the circle of life, perhaps more specifically displaying the drastic difference in perception between the hungry spider and the frightened fly. One could find a lot of symbolism in this image, but I would focus on the web and the relationship between the spider and fly.
Judgement: It is a very interesting image - both conceptually and visually. The trees behind the foreground even seem to be forcing your eyes to focus on the center of the image.
